UCU A Tale of Vast Cultures.

Acholi Preparing for the traditional dance

Under the mesmerising lights of Nkoyoyo Hall, a harmonious dance of diverse cultures unfolded.

On the 4th of November, the year 2023, Uganda Christian University (UCU) witnessed the transformation of its hall into a vibrant tapestry filled with color, rhythms, and cherished traditions.

Excitement and anticipation electrified the air as the gala commenced with a welcoming address by Ddumba Timothy, the guild president.

Acholi dancers gracefully leapt and twirled like flickering flames in the wind, adorning the eyes with their “apila” folk song and vibrant costumes.

Lango singers soared like eagles on the wings of their haunting melodies, captivating the crowd with their traditional fashion.

Iteso dancers stomped and chanted, channeling the energy of warriors on the battlefield, electrifying the audience.

From the Karimojong to the Banyankole to the Bagisu, each tribe showcased their unique cultural expressions with unwavering passion and pride.

Basoga singers serenaded the audience with soulful ballads, while Baganda dancers mesmerized with their graceful movements, all accompanied by symphonic voices entwining with “Obuganda buradde” Nankasa and the powerful Simba Mawogola.

International cultures found their place, represented by the South Sudan Students Association, who presented a mesmerizing folk song.

The Cultural Gala wasn’t just a celebration of Ugandan traditional dances; it was also a feast of delectable culinary delights.

From the northern regions, the Acholi treated us to their hearty “kaal” millet porridge, the Lango with their savory “Dek olelo” peanut stew, and the Iteso with their mouthwatering “atapa” millet.

Moving eastward, the Karimojong shared their succulent “nyakiring” beef skewers, the Banyankole their creamy “eshabwe” milk sauce, and their flavorful “bishaba.”

From the central heartland, the Baganda presented their iconic “matooke” steamed bananas, the Basoga offered their tangy “oluwombo” stew, and the Bagisu delivered their delicious “malewa” stew.

As the night waned, the audience was left in awe, marvelling at the rich tapestry of cultures within the university.

This year, the Acholi Students clinched the prestigious UCU Cultural Gala title, with the Nkoba Zambogo and the Basoga Students Association tying for second place.

The Cultural Gala of 2023 embodied the celebration of diversity and unity, a powerful reminder that our shared humanity connects us all.
