Bard Goes Premium with “Gemini Advanced” AI: Can it Catch Up to the Competition?

By Michael Ainomugisha

Well, I must admit I can not avoid using chat bots, google bard has been one of those I am familiar with especially on content description generation and enhancing my content ideas as copied from my kitchen “notes app”

Yesterday, February 9th I wanted to get the nitty gritty in which the trending “GEN-Z Bible” so I rushed into my bookmarks on Safari and Bard was no more it was something called Gemini.

Following the footsteps of competitors like OpenAI, Google is entering the AI subscription market with its “Gemini Advanced” model. This move signals the company’s intent to make its advanced AI technology accessible to more consumers, marking a significant shift from its previous behind-the-scenes approach.

Priced at $20 per month, Gemini Advanced will be offered as a premium tier within Google’s existing cloud storage subscription service. This strategic decision leverages a user base of nearly 100 million, potentially facilitating wider adoption. The new AI model will be available on various platforms, including a dedicated Android app, the Google app on iPhones, the web, and eventually, other Google products like Gmail and Docs.

This move mirrors similar offerings from OpenAI’s “GPT Plus’ ‘ and Perplexity’s premium subscription, reflecting the growing trend of monetising AI chatbots. With the technology still evolving, concerns remain about copyright infringement, potential harm to democracy, and increased fraud. However, companies are eager to stake their claim in the emerging market, hoping to capitalise on the potential of AI becoming a major force in online interactions.

While not without its limitations, such as generating false information, the AI race continues. Google, despite its foundational research contributions, has faced criticism for lagging behind OpenAI, Microsoft, and even smaller startups in commercialising AI. The Gemini announcement and its subscription model indicate a potential turning point for Google’s AI business strategy.

By offering a dedicated Android app, Google leverages its dominant mobile phone presence to reach a wider audience. This approach aligns with the company’s broader strategy of making its AI technology more user-facing, a shift from its previous behind-the-scenes integration.

Apple, despite its own advancements in Siri, faces questions about its pace compared to Google and other competitors. While Apple has confirmed its commitment to improving its AI capabilities, investors and analysts remain sceptical about its ability to keep up with the rapidly evolving landscape.

Google’s “Gemini Advanced” marks a significant step in the democratisation of advanced AI technology. While concerns about the technology’s potential drawbacks remain, the move signifies a growing market with immense potential.

As the competition intensifies, it will be interesting to see how Google and other players navigate the ethical and technical challenges while shaping the future of AI interactions.
